For some, the joy of fly fishing is as much being with the fish as it catching them. And for many, preparation and presentation brings its own brand of excitement.
However, the excitement that accompanies the playing and landing of a big Trout brings much additional satisfaction, especially to those who know how to play a Trout correctly. In other words, you have your cake - you eat your cake - you still have your cake.
The purpose of playing a fish is to bring it securely to net - not to see it thrash to the surface time and time again. A fish fights violently because its natural sense of balance, normally controlled by the air bladder and sense organs, are disturbed.
Once this happens, the fish will make every effort to stabilize itself again. Its inability to stabilize itself reflects a high level of stress (as in the term "belly-up") and possibly death to the fish. If we are going to successfully release our catch, we need to take this into consideration.
On the other hand, never forget that a lethargic fish may appear exhausted when in fact they often have one desperate run left in them. Many beginners are fooled into complacency by a tired fish only to witness their quarry gain their freedom because of too much tension on a desperate and very much alive fish making an unexpected run.
If you plan on successfully releasing your catch, an understanding of several tactics, which minimize stress on your catch, will prove helpful.
In fly fishing, a fine tippet for proper presentation of your imitation is vital to successful angling. However, this fine stealth-like material and its knots will be the biggest cause of you losing fish. Understanding why will help you to minimize these potential

For some of us there will be times when a fresh catch is so close to the dinner bell that we elect to make our catch a keeper.
Eating a recently caught, wonderfully prepared fresh Trout will offer a gastronomic delight that is as rewarding as the fishing. However, it's important to know that your fresh catch exposed to the air will quickly deteriorate because as soon as the fish dies, the enzymes in the flesh sets off this process, which causes deterioration by breaking down cell tissue.
Once the excitement of the catch calms down we need to become aware of and follow a few rules when killing, cleaning, storing and cooking our prize catch.
